Ooty Toy Train Booking: How to Book the Nilgiri Mountain Railway

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway — Ooty's beloved blue-and-cream "toy train" — is a UNESCO World Heritage ride and one of the most popular things to do in the hills. It's also the trickiest to get tickets for, because seats sell out fast. Here's exactly how to book the Ooty toy train, plus the little details that catch people out.

The route in brief

The line runs about 46 km between Mettupalayam (down near Coimbatore), up through Coonoor, to Udhagamandalam (Ooty). The steep lower section from Mettupalayam to Coonoor is hauled by a historic steam locomotive using a rack-and-pinion track; the Coonoor–Ooty stretch is usually a diesel service. The full climb takes roughly 4.5–5 hours (it's meant to be slow); the shorter Coonoor–Ooty leg is around an hour.

How to book the Ooty toy train online (IRCTC)

Toy-train seats are reserved tickets, booked through Indian Railways — the same system as any train:

• Create a free account at irctc.co.in (or use the IRCTC Rail Connect app).
• Search stations correctly: type Udagamandalam (UAM) — not "Ooty", which returns no trains. Other stations are Mettupalayam (MTP) and Coonoor (ONR).
• Enter your date, pick the toy-train service, choose your class, add each passenger's details and pay.
• Carry the e-ticket and a matching photo ID for the passengers on the booking.

You can also book at any railway reservation counter (Mettupalayam, Coonoor and Ooty stations all have one), which is handy if online availability has gone.

When does booking open?

Reserved tickets open a fixed number of days before departure — currently around 60 days for most Indian Railways trains, but check the live Advance Reservation Period on IRCTC. The toy train is in huge demand: window seats and First Class can sell out within minutes in peak season (April–June and holidays), so book the moment the date opens. If the full climb is sold out, the shorter Coonoor↔Ooty passenger services are usually easier to get.

Classes and fares

There are two classes — First Class (reserved, more comfortable, pricier) and Second Class (budget-friendly). Fares are low and set by Indian Railways; Second Class can start at just a few tens of rupees, with First Class higher. Exact fares and timings change with season, maintenance blocks and special trains, so always confirm on IRCTC before you travel.

Tips to actually get a seat

• Book as far ahead as the system allows — this is the single biggest factor.
• For the best valley views on the climb up from Mettupalayam, many travellers prefer seats on the right-hand side.
• The morning Mettupalayam–Ooty departure is the classic run; there's an afternoon return.
• Can't get the full route? Ride the shorter, easier-to-book Coonoor–Ooty leg — still gorgeous.
• Carry warm layers; it's cool and often misty, and windows are open.
